Use the wrong method and you can wreck a roof or etch your render. Here's the simple rule for choosing between soft washing and pressure washing.
The simple rule: hard, durable, ground-level surfaces (driveways, patios, paths) can take pressure washing. Delicate, porous or vertical surfaces (roofs, render, cladding, painted brick) need soft washing. Get this the wrong way round and you can strip a roof, blast holes in soft render, or drive water into walls.

What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing (or jet washing) uses a high-pressure water jet to physically blast dirt, moss, weeds and grime off a surface. It's fast and effective — on the right material. We use it on:
- Driveways — block paving, concrete, tarmac (with care)
- Patios and paving slabs
- Paths, steps and hard standing
- Some heavy-duty commercial surfaces

What is soft washing?
Soft washing uses low pressure — barely more than a garden hose — combined with specialist cleaning solutions and a biocide that kill algae, moss, lichen and bacteria at the root. The chemistry does the work, not brute force. It's the correct method for:
- Roofs — concrete, clay and slate tiles
- Render — K-rend, monocouche, painted and pebbledash
- Cladding — timber, composite and uPVC
- Brickwork and soft stone
- Anything painted, coated or fragile
Because it kills the spores rather than just blasting off the surface growth, a soft wash also stays cleaner for longer. Our render cleaning and roof cleaning work is almost always soft wash or chemical-free steam.

Why using the wrong method is so costly
- Roofs: high pressure strips the protective surface off tiles, forces water underneath and can take years off the roof's life.
- Render: a jet can crack the surface, blow it off the wall in patches, and let water in behind it.
- Timber and cladding: pressure furs up the grain and splinters soft boards.
- Block paving: too much pressure removes the jointing sand and pits the surface.
A good cleaner doesn't own "a pressure washer" — they own a range of methods and choose the right one for the material in front of them. That includes chemical-free steam, which is our preferred approach for delicate roofs and render because it cleans with heat and very low pressure, with minimal chemical use.
What about coastal homes?
Around Chichester, the Witterings, Birdham and Selsey, the damp, salty sea air feeds algae and green growth fast — especially on north-facing render and roofs. Soft washing with a biocide is the method that actually keeps it away, rather than having it back within months.
