Why coastal salt and sand cut your panel output

Solar panels only work as well as the light that reaches the cells — and here on the West Sussex coast there is a lot working against them. Sea salt carried on the wind, fine sand blown off the beaches around West Wittering and Bracklesham, dust, pollen and bird mess all settle on the glass and build into a dull film. That film scatters and blocks the sunlight before it ever reaches the cells beneath.

The difference is that coastal panels soil far faster than inland ones. The salty, sandy air around Selsey, the Witterings and Bognor Regis means a noticeable layer can re-form within months — and rain alone does not clear it. Salt in particular dries into a stubborn haze that needs a proper clean to remove.

The performance and savings angle

Because the drop happens slowly, most people never notice their panels are underperforming — the generation figures just quietly slide. A coated array can lose several percent of its output, and a heavily soiled coastal one considerably more. Over a year, on a system you have invested thousands in, that lost generation adds up to real money.

Our safe pure-water method

Solar glass, its seals and the anti-reflective coating are easily damaged, so this is no place for high pressure or harsh chemicals — both can scratch or etch the surface and even void the manufacturer warranty. Instead we use a gentle, residue-free pure-water system:

• Purified, de-ionised water and a soft brush on a reach pole lift the salt, sand and grime without touching the panel with anything abrasive.
• Because the water is purified, it dries completely spot-free — no chemical residue, no smears, nothing left on the glass to attract more dirt.
• Reach-and-wash poles let us clean most arrays safely from the ground, with no need to walk on the roof or the panels.
