Why patio cleaning is worth doing properly

The right method for patio cleaning
We choose the technique to suit the surface — soft washing or chemical-free steam where pressure would do harm, controlled pressure washing where it won't. That's how patio cleaning gets a lasting result without damage.
Stops damage before it costs you
Left to spread, moss, algae and lichen trap moisture against your roof, walls and surfaces and shorten their life. Regular cleaning is the cheaper, greener way to stay ahead of remedial building work.
Certified biocide treatments
Fully certified to disinfect and prevent regrowth, applied with minimal impact on occupants, pets and wildlife.

Patio & paving types we clean
A patio is where a garden comes together — and on the West Sussex coast it is also where the damp salt air does its worst. Natural stone goes black, porcelain dulls, and block paving greens up in the joints until the whole space looks tired and feels slippery underfoot. We bring it all back. Our patio and paving cleaning rejuvenates dingy, discoloured slabs so they look close to newly laid — and because different materials need different care, we match the pressure to the surface:
Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, slate and Indian stone, the most common patios we clean across Chichester and the Witterings; cleaned at a controlled pressure that lifts the grime without scarring soft stone.
Porcelain & concrete slabs — harder-wearing surfaces that take a firmer wash to strip back the black algae and ingrained dirt.
Block paving & crazy paving — we clear the moss and weeds packed into every joint and rinse the whole surface even where the slabs are mixed sizes.
Pathways & steps — the paving around the patio cleaned to match, so the whole space looks cared for, not just the centre.
It is the same surface-appropriate thinking that runs through the wider pressure washing service and our gentler soft washing work — the right method for the material, never one harsh tool for everything.
Algae & slip-hazard removal
Most of what makes a patio look tired — and dangerous — lives on the surface and in the joints, and that is exactly what we clear:
Black algae, green slime & lichen — lifted off the slabs and out of the joints; on the damp coastal patios around Selsey and Bracklesham this film is also what makes paving treacherous when it is wet.
Moss & weeds — cleared from between paving slabs and block paving so the joints look clean and stay clear longer.
Salt & sand grime — the fine film the sea air leaves on every patio near the Witterings, rinsed away to bring the natural colour of the stone back.
Clearing the algae is not just about looks: a slippery patio is a genuine hazard through the wet West Sussex winters, especially for steps and around doorways. Bringing the grip back is one of the most worthwhile reasons to have it done.
A note on what we do and don’t do: we are a cleaning service. We restore the patio, paving and decking to clean — we do not seal the stone or restore garden furniture. If you would like your patio sealed once it is clean, we are glad to recommend a trusted sealing specialist locally.
Decking cleaning
Timber and composite decking suffers the same coastal algae as paving — and goes slippery even faster. We clean decking gently and thoroughly, lifting the green film and ingrained grime from the boards and the gaps between them to bring back the grain and, just as importantly, the grip. We have brought tired decks back to life from Chichester gardens to coastal plots out at East Wittering. For the full detail on timber and composite decks, see our dedicated decking cleaning page.
Before & after
The difference a proper clean makes to a patio is hard to overstate — a black, green, slippery space comes back looking close to the day it was laid, and it lifts the whole garden with it. Every job above was a real patio or deck we cleaned across the harbour villages, from paving slabs in East Wittering to a patio out at Birdham and decking in Chichester. A clean patio is also a safer one: clearing the algae takes the slip hazard away through the wet winters.
A few short clips from real jobs across Chichester & the harbour villages — the soft-wash method matched to the surface, done properly and tidied up after.
Do you clean patios across Chichester and the harbour villages?
Yes. Patio, paving and decking cleaning is one of our most-requested jobs right across Chichester (PO18, PO19) and the harbour villages — West Wittering, East Wittering, Bracklesham, Birdham, Itchenor and Selsey (PO20) — out to Bognor Regis (PO21/PO22) and Emsworth (PO10) on the Hampshire border. If you are nearby, just ask.
What types of patio and paving can you jet wash?
All the common ones we see around Chichester and the Witterings — natural stone (sandstone, limestone, slate), porcelain, concrete and block paving slabs, Indian stone, and crazy paving. We match the pressure and method to the surface so soft natural stone is never blasted as hard as a solid concrete slab.
Can you get the black algae and green slime off my paving slabs?
In most cases, yes — that black-and-green film is exactly what we clear. The damp salt air near the Witterings and Selsey grows algae and lichen quickly on patios, and beyond looking tired it makes the slabs dangerously slippery. We lift it, rinse the salt-and-sand grime away and bring the colour of the stone back.
Do you seal the patio or restore garden furniture afterwards?
We are a cleaning service — we don't apply patio sealant or restore garden furniture. We will always leave your patio, paving and decking thoroughly clean, and if you would like the stone sealed afterwards we are happy to recommend a trusted sealing specialist in the Chichester area.
How often should a patio be cleaned on the West Sussex coast?
Most Chichester patios benefit from a clean every one to two years, but the damp coastal air near Bracklesham, the Witterings and Selsey grows algae faster, so seaside patios and decking often need it yearly to stay clear and slip-free through the wet winters. We are happy to advise when we quote.
