Decking soft washing, Chichester
Why decking cleaning is worth doing properly

The right method for decking cleaning
We choose the technique to suit the surface — soft washing or chemical-free steam where pressure would do harm, controlled pressure washing where it won't. That's how decking cleaning gets a lasting result without damage.
Stops damage before it costs you
Left to spread, moss, algae and lichen trap moisture against your roof, walls and surfaces and shorten their life. Regular cleaning is the cheaper, greener way to stay ahead of remedial building work.
Certified biocide treatments
Fully certified to disinfect and prevent regrowth, applied with minimal impact on occupants, pets and wildlife.

Owner-led and fully insured, known across Chichester and West Sussex for careful work and fair pricing — domestic and commercial equally welcome.
Timber & composite decking
A deck is meant to be the best seat in the garden — but left to the coastal damp it turns green, grey and slippery long before its time. We bring it back. Our decking cleaning lifts the algae, black spot and ingrained grime off the boards and out of the grooves, so the timber looks cared for again and is safe to walk barefoot. We clean every kind we see across Chichester and the Witterings:
Timber & softwood decking — weathered, greying boards cleaned at a gentle, controlled pressure that lifts the grime without furring or gouging the wood.
Composite decking — the modern boards on so many newer coastal homes, cleaned thoroughly and evenly so the colour comes back without surface damage.
Steps, rails & edges — the shaded, slow-to-dry corners that go slipperiest first, cleaned along with the main run.
We clean the boards — we do not oil, stain or seal them. It is the same surface-appropriate thinking that runs through the wider pressure washing service and our gentler soft washing work: the right method for the material, never one harsh tool for everything.
Removing algae & black spot
The green slime and stubborn black spots that creep across decking are not just unsightly — they are what makes the boards dangerous. Decking sits low, shaded and slow to dry, and the damp salt air off the coast keeps it wet for weeks, so algae and mould take hold fast:
Green algae film — the slippery layer washed back to clean, bare board.
Black spot & mould — the ingrained dark staining lifted out of the timber grain and grooves.
Salt & sand grime — the fine film the sea air leaves on every deck near Selsey and Bracklesham, rinsed away to bring the colour back.
Slip-hazard removal
A clean deck is a safer deck. Almost everything that makes decking treacherous — the green film, the black mould, the wet slime in the grooves — is exactly what our clean strips away, which matters most on the shaded, sea-facing decks through the wet West Sussex winters. It is work we do right across the harbour villages, from town gardens in Chichester to coastal decks out at West Wittering and East Wittering. If the patio alongside needs the same care, see our dedicated patio cleaning, or for the drive, our driveway cleaning.
Areas we cover
We clean timber and composite decking right across Chichester and the harbour villages: Chichester (PO18, PO19), West Wittering, East Wittering, Bracklesham, Birdham, Itchenor and Selsey (PO20), out to Bognor Regis (PO21, PO22) and Emsworth (PO10) on the Hampshire border. A clean deck is also a safer one — clearing the algae and black spot takes the slip hazard away through the damp coastal winters.

Do you clean decking across Chichester and the harbour villages?
Yes. Decking cleaning is one of our regular jobs right across Chichester (PO18, PO19) and the harbour villages — West Wittering, East Wittering, Bracklesham, Birdham, Itchenor and Selsey (PO20) — out to Bognor Regis (PO21/PO22) and Emsworth (PO10) on the Hampshire border. If you are nearby, just ask.
Can you clean composite decking as well as timber?
Yes — both. We clean traditional timber decking and modern composite boards, which we see plenty of around the newer Witterings and Bracklesham homes. We match the method to the material: a gentler, controlled wash for softer or weathered timber, and a thorough clean for composite, so the boards come up evenly without being damaged.
Will cleaning the deck stop it being slippery?
In almost every case, yes. The green algae and slimy black film that make a deck treacherous are exactly what we strip off. That matters most on the shaded, sea-facing decks near the Witterings and Selsey, where the damp coastal air keeps timber wet and grows algae fast through the West Sussex winters.
Do you oil, stain or seal the decking after cleaning?
No — we are a cleaning service, not a decking treatment company. We clean the boards back to a fresh, even, slip-free surface and leave the finishing there. If you want the deck oiled or sealed afterwards, it is far easier to do well once we have it clean, and we are happy to point you in the right direction.
How often should decking be cleaned on the West Sussex coast?
Most Chichester decks benefit from a clean once a year, but the damp salt air near the Witterings and Selsey grows algae and black spot faster, so coastal and shaded decks often need it every spring to stay clean and safe underfoot. We are happy to advise when we quote.
